My name is Brian Carling and I am a trainee driving coach with the AA driving school. I operate in the south side of Edinburgh. For a full list of areas see the FAQs.
A trainee driving coach holds a provisional license from the DVSA, allowing them to teach paid lessons while completing their qualification.
You get the same structured lessons at a lower rate, set by my driving school, the AA. I have passed two driving exams and my teaching is regularly assessed to ensure high standards and your safety.
Hourly rate:

Why learn on an automatic?
Learning in an automatic removes the clutch and gear stick, letting you focus entirely on road awareness, positioning, and safe decision making. You'll master the essential skills faster, feel more confident sooner, and often pass your test in fewer lessons.
Nearly all electric vehicles are automatic and driving one is almost the same as driving a regular automatic. By learning in an automatic today, you're not just passing your test—you're preparing for the future of driving.

In which areas do you operate? I take lessons in the following areas: Blackford, Bruntsfield, Buckstone, Burdiehouse, Colinton, Comiston, Craiglockhart, Fairmilehead, Fountainbridge, Greenhill, Inch, Liberton, Longstone, Marchmont, Mayfield, Moredun, Morningside, Oxgangs, Prestonfield, Redford, The Grange, West End.
Which test centres do you prepare students for? I prepare students for tests at the Currie or Musselburgh test centres.
Do I need to pass my theory test first? No, not at all, you don't have to have passed the theory test before having lessons. And I am happy to give guidance and advice on passing the theory test.
What do I need to bring to my first lesson? Just bring your provisional licence and required eyewear. I would advise wearing comfy shoes such as trainers.
What happens during the first lesson? Regardless of your experience we'll start driving on quiet roads while I assess your skill level. If you have already aquired some experience we can quickly progress. If you have little or no experience we'll move forward at a speed you feel comfortable with.
FAQs
How many lessons will I need to pass? Individual times vary with many students passing an automatic driving test after around 30 hours of lessons, supplemented by 20 hours of individual practice. This is far less than is typical in a manual car.
How do I know when I am ready for the test? We will assess this together and you'll get the chance to take mock tests to be sure you're ready.
How does booking the test work? You will have to book the test yourself as coaches are no longer allowed to book tests for students. I can assist you with this.
What car do I use for the test? You can take the test in any car you're insured for. However, it is recomended to take the test in your coach's car.
